Near the end of the clip preceding this one, Batchelor points out that even though Buddhism has a very “developed and sophisticated mythology, imagery, and demonology” in regards to Mara, it is unique in Indian literature. On the other hand, he is very similar to the devil of the Abrahamic traditions.

In this clip, he describes what he sees as the core of the demonic, a sense of being stuck, then goes into the depiction of Satan, as found in Dante’s Devine Comedy; distressed, weeping, stuck, frozen, heartless, dark. The very opposite of the “free flow of life itself.”
